At today's meeting, a question was asked about the slide showing the movement of the center of population from 1790 to 1900. According to the U.S. Census, the map does reflect the exact center of population both east and west as well as north and south. Their explanation is that if an equal weight were assigned to each person, the map would balance at that point.

For an updated map from 1790 to 2000, go to the Census home page, http://www.census.gov/index.html and search for: meanctr.pdf

Thanks, Louie Holt
