I found an article in the New York Times of September 17, 1875, A Genealogy of Crime. You may have to complete a free registration with this newspaper.
The story is a bit unusual. It is of the stuff you might expect in a Caleb Carr or Stephen King novel. However Mr. Dugdale appears to be sincere and real.
